“Si vis pacem, para bellum. (If you want peace, prepare for war.)”
-Publius Flavius Vegetius Renatus
Comparisons of war and litigation abound. A student of military history, it is fitting that these adages embody Tom’s approach to practicing law. In the litigation arena, many clients recognize that “peace” is often more desirable than “war” and less costly. But if peace is desired, it is the warrior most prepared for battle that usually achieves the most gratifying peace. Although litigation presents many challenges, lack of preparation is not a challenge for Tom. For over three decades, Tom’s hard work, preparation, skill, effective advocacy and efficient approach has served his clients well, in both war and peace.
Tom graduated from Loyola Law School, where he was a member of the Law Review and a member of the Moot Court Team that placed high in a national competition. Tom was admitted to the Louisiana Bar in 1983, and soon thereafter to all Louisiana federal district courts and the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. He was admitted to the Bar of the United States Supreme Court in 1993, and to the Texas Bar in 2011. Tom has litigated and tried numerous jury and bench trials in Louisiana state and federal district courts, and he has argued in multiple Louisiana appellate courts, the Louisiana Supreme Court and the United States Fifth Circuit and Tom has mediated hundreds of cases, using the same tools that he brings to the courtroom to achieve favorable results for his client.
Tom has been selected in Louisiana “Super Lawyer” and among the “Top Lawyers in the New Orleans Area” in New Orleans Magazine. A number of our lawyers have been selected for inclusion in Louisiana “Super Lawyers” by the Super Lawyers’ rating service and magazine, designating them as “outstanding lawyers who have attained a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement based upon independent research, peer nominations, and evaluations. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the Defense Research Institute, the Counsel on Litigation Management, and the Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel.
Tom has also often been called on to provide his insurance clients with continuing education on issues such as claims handling, where his years of experience and legal advice serve his clients well.
When not practicing law, or satisfying his voracious appetite for military history and non-fiction, Tom is an avid baseball fan, and enjoys travel, camping and working and playing outdoors.
